What is a root canal designed to do?
The procedure removes affected tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and seals the canal space, and prepares the tooth for protection. A crown or other restoration may be recommended afterward depending on the tooth and remaining structure.

Treatment focuses on the inside of the tooth; long-term function also depends on how the tooth is restored and maintained afterward.
Limits and referral
Not every tooth can or should receive root canal treatment. Complexity, fractures, restorability and prognosis may change the plan or require referral.
